Eric Tasker Inducted into Okanagan Sports Hall of Fame!
Eric "Mr. Soccer" Tasker, Co-Founder and President of the Okanagan Challenge Soccer Club was inducted posthumously in the Builder category of the Okanagan Sports Hall of Fame.
The Central Okanagan Sports Hall Of Fame inducted the late Eric Tasker into the Hall in the Builder Category during a moving ceremony in Kelowna on November 24th at which Vancouver Whitecaps FC CEO Paul Barber was the guest of honour.
Eric was known as Mr. Soccer in the Central Okanagan and was passionate about "the beautiful game”. He played, coached, managed, refereed and gave much of his time promoting and organizing the sport in Kelowna. His dream was to bring elite senior soccer to the area, a dream he realised when through his untiring efforts the Okanagan Challenge FC was formed with Eric as a founding member.
Sadly Eric Tasker died of cancer on April 21, 2010 leaving the Okanagan Challenge FC as part of his legacy. During his life Eric received many awards for his commitment and dedication to the game of soccer. These included: A service award from the 1988 Calgary Olympics. 1994 BCSA Merit Award for his services to the Development of Referees in the Okanagan. 2008 PCSL Merit Award for his Services to the Development of Senior Soccer.
The Okanagan Challenge club has been a long time member of the Pacific Coast Soccer League (PCSL). Whilst they have been league champions and Challenge Cup winners several times over the years, the PCSL 2009 season was an extra special one for the club and Eric, its president. The Okanagan Challenge won the coveted Triple Crown by taking the George Cambridge Trophy as men’s league champions, the Shelia Anderson Memorial Cup as Challenge Cup winners then completed the sweep by winning the famous J. F. Kennedy Cup in competition with teams from Oregon and Washington State USA. The Okanagan Challenge is only the second club to ever achieve this feat.
Eric Tasker’s induction into the Okanagan Sports Hall of Fame is a well deserved honour that crowns a lifetime of dedication to the game of soccer.
